In 1986 (year Top Gun was produced), Captain Robert J. Kelly (who was promoted to admiral and is now retired) was the current captain of the aircraft-carrier Enterprise(CVN-65).

In the movie Top Gun (1986), the captain of the Enterprise is not identified. However, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell's CAG is Cmdr. Tom "Stinger" Jordan, who is played by James Tolkan.
