How can you tell if something is wrong with your computer?

Basic troubleshooting includes whether or not you get video on bootup, whether you get fan and power on power on, beeps from POST checking (Power On Self Test), any error codes the system gives, logfiles. Modern computers are complex things and unless you know exactly what to do, it's best to leave it to professionals (and let them take the electrical zap!)
