First supersonic passenger-carrying commercial airplane. It was built jointly by British and French manufacturers and was in regular service from 1976 to 2003. Its maximum cruising speed was 2,179 km (1,354 mi) per hour, more than twice the speed of sound. A London - New York flight took less than four hours on the Concorde, but financial losses on the plane finally led both the British and French airlines to withdraw it from service.
