What does side-to-side clinical study mean?

I believe it is a study where an experiment/s on effectiveness of a drug or any medical process is being conducted at several sites/labs in parallel (meaning of side by side ??). At a predetermined point (# of days or weeks later as pre-established by the team of experts of that study) the results of those independent sites studies are then compared for an overall outcome of that drug or process.
