Plants obtain carbon from the atmosphere by breaking CO2 apart and releasing the oxygen during photosynthesis.

Animals eat the plants, excrete an undigested portion of the carbon, and exhale the rest through respiration of the carbon with atmospheric oxygen (or in the case of marine animals--oxygen dissolved in water).
