What is eaten at Easter to symbolize the crucifixion?

In the UK, a small tea cake or bun with the shape of a cross laid across the top. Known as Hot Cross buns, these are now sold throughout the year but were primarily meant for the Easter celebrations. The cross is normally made from a mix of egg, sugar and water and laid across the cake before baking.
