During the French & Indian War, George Washington, as a young officer, was given an order to go upstate New York into the Lake Champlain area on the border of Canada, on a recon mission. He had with him a very accomplished scout. His troop got lost, and fearing hostile Indian attack in the thick forest, he ordered everyone to "split up". He was left alone with his scout, whom saved his life at least twice on the journey home from Indians. When Washington got back to headquarters - he was "ripped a new one" for being so foolish. Precise details such as dates escape me, but that incident was his first controversy.
