First, find out what the legal working age is in your area. Call or visit the website of the government agency that regulates labor and industry. In the U.S., go to the Department of Labor's site at www.dol.gov. Under the "Find It!" sidebar, click on the "More" link under "Topics". Look for "Youth & Employment", click on "Age Requirements". To find specific information for your state, click on the state labor laws link. The "Youth Rules" link will also be helpful. It has a list of jobs people age 13 and younger can do. Second, if businesses in your area are unable or unwilling to hire you because of your age, think about starting your own hairdressing business. Figure out what services you'll offer, and how much you'll charge based upon what people are willing to pay. Learn safe hygiene practices. Decide where you'll provide the service. Will people come to you or will you go to them? Will you be safe? Ask everyone you know, including adults. Be creative! Make flyers and advertise your service to family, friends, and people you trust.
