Who were the first writers?

This question has no specific answer. Humans still created stories long before a system of writing was invented. They passed down their stories, myths, and legends by teaching them to the younger generation. Moreover, even after a system of writing was developed, many copies of stories were lost to the elements and time. It is unlikely that most would survive to present day. The oldest known written story is the Tale of Gilgamesh by an unknown author.
