Keel boats and later steam boats carried raw materials to New Orleans and carried manufactured goods back up the rivers. During the American Revolutionary War, Daniel Boone used a keel boat to bring ammunition from New Orleans up the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers and the French Broad to Western North Carolina. The Americans used it for the battle of Kings Mountain.
