What is a controlled composition?

A controlled composition is a song that is written, owned or controlled by the artist/creator. Often record labels require that any song written by the producer to also be a controlled composition. A controlled composition clause is put into a recording contract to limit how much the record company has to pay for each song because, unlike artist royalties, labels generally do not recoup advances, recording costs, etc. from mechanicals.
