The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949. It forms a collective defense and its member states agree to a combined effort in response to any threat. Original members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The First Nato Secretary General, Lord Ismay, described the NATO goal as "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down."
