A "national rate" number is a telephone number that is supposed to be charged at the same rate as a long distance call within the same country. However, be careful, as in many countries the rates for regular long distance calls have dropped dramatically while what were formerly "national rate" numbers have not. For that reason, in the UK, what were formerly called "national rate" numbers are now called "Special Services: Higher Rate."
