He won all states northeast of Washington D.C., including the swing states of Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Delaware, as well as the more solid Democratic support bases in New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
Much of the Midwest is supportive of the Democrats but has a large Republican base; Obama carried pretty much every state between Minnesota/Iowa and Pennsylvania, including the important swing states of Ohio and Iowa. He easily carried his home state of Illinois and also picked up Indiana, the first time a Democrat had done so since 1964.
On the other side of the country, Obama carried California (which has provided solid support for the Democrats since 1992), Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and the swing state of Nevada. Further inland, he also carried the swing states of Colorado and New Mexico.
In the South, Obama won Florida, the largest swing state. He also picked up North Carolina and Virginia. These states had not been xarried by a Democrat since 1976 and 1964 respectively. Obama was aided by strong turnout of both Black voters and young voters.
Finally, while McCain carried Nebraska as a whole, Nebraska allows its vote to be split if the runner-up wins a majority in one of the Congressional Districts. Obama won 1 of Nebraska's 5 electoral votes, having won a majority in Nebraska's 2nd District (the city of Omaha).
