Digital Video Disk was the first published expansion of the letters although the DVD forum put forward a new name of Digital Versatile Disc a few years after the DVD was launched. The new name was quietly introduced to reflect the idea that DVD is storage for more than video.

In 1999, it was suggested that DVD actually stood for nothing at all.

Today, a few manufacturers hang on the Digital Video Disk name while most use Digital Versatile Disc. For those who don't like either name, the 1999 "it means nothing" movement is still going but it remains an exclusive club with very few members.
