When did old folks homes start?

Old folks' homes, or nursing homes, began to emerge in the 19th century, primarily in Europe and North America. The first dedicated institution in the U.S. is often considered to be the New York State Home for the Aged and Infirm, established in 1829. Initially, these homes were intended to care for the poor and elderly who had no family support, and their concept evolved over time to include more comprehensive medical care and support services.
