What is the symbolism behind a square knot tattoo?

My father is an old sailor (from the late 1950's through the early 1990's). He has a square knot tattoo, said he got it after working on a U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker years ago. He said a lot of sailors will get the square knot after crossing both the arctic and antarctic circles.
