What can a mass air flow sensor cause that is going bad prevent an engine from doing?

I found that I would have trouble starting the truck , rough idle and poor fuel mileage , there is a product on the market that will clean the sensor. CRC makes it and it's called MAF cleaner , about $6.oo , good luck. Terman
