Who invented pinatas?

Pinatas, hollow paper mache figures filled with candy or gifts, are mostly associated with Mexico and Spain. However, the pinata may have originally come from China, where Marco Polo found people who made figures of animals covered in paper. filled them with seeds and broke them open on New Year's Day.
