Hernán Cortés sailed for Spain. He is best known for his expedition that led to the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in present-day Mexico between 1519 and 1521. Cortés departed from the Spanish port of Cuba, where he had been previously appointed as an explorer and governor. His journey ultimately resulted in significant territorial expansion for Spain in the New World.
