What is sanctuary?

"Sanctuary" refers to a place set aside or designated as a protected spot. Churches are often deemed as places of sanctuary by a person who feels he or she needs protection from authorities or law enforcement.

The more well-known forms of sanctuary are areas set aside by humans for the protection of land wildlife, sea life, or ocean life.
