Why are flights more expensive on certain days of the week?

Flights are normally more expensive on days that are popular days for travel. This includes Mondays, Fridays, and weekends. Whether for business during the week, or a getaway on the weekend, airlines know these are prime days so they make their flights more expensive in order to make more money.
