What is the purpose of capacitor in power supply higher than rated voltage?

The voltage marked on a capacitor is its MAXIMUM SAFE WORKING VOLTAGE.

The capacitor will work in a circuit at any voltage lower than that, but it may

fail at any higher voltage.
