How did albuquerque get its name?

The name comes from a Spanish city of a nearly identical name. One of New Spain's provincial governors, Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, was also 8th Duke of Alburquerque in Spain.

Other, less likely sources are the Galician name for the apricot (albaricoque) which was cultivated in the region.
