How was the federal government during reconstruction?

During Reconstruction (1865-1877), the federal government took significant steps to rebuild the South and integrate formerly enslaved people into society. It implemented policies through the Reconstruction Acts, which divided the South into military districts and required states to draft new constitutions guaranteeing African American voting rights.
