Why use power interface unit in telecom?

it is a unit in a BTS i.e. base transreciever system..these bts are installed with towers that are used for mobile communication. The piu consists of a power plant and battery bank. power plant has rectifier to convert ac to dc and battery back up is used in case of power failure.
