Snacks happen. They just do. While you may think that you have an issue with your willpower but the truth is that snacks are nothing to be ashamed of. Lets start with reassurance. We all have issues with our hunger, and sometimes a meal is not appropriate and not practical at all. At those times the meal is not an option and a snack is your best choice if you want to be able to get through the day without losing your focus or being miserable until you get to your next mealtime.

The thing about snacks is not that they are inherently bad. You just have to be ready to make good choices when you reach for a snack. After all a good snack can keep you full till dinner time and a bad snack will not only throw your weight loss efforts off of track but also leave you with another craving in an hour or two, one caused by low blood sugar, that will need another sweet treat in order to get you back to right. That means that you will end up with double the calories and twice the snacks to deal with one simple issue. So now, lets begin by talking about how you can make good choices when you reach for a mid afternoon snack. That way you can be proud of your choices instead of upset by their results on the scale.

Choose Light Options

Remember your snack should be a snack, not a meal. You need to remember to choose something very light if you want to stay health. Sadly too many people will, when they want a snack, instead pick up a meal. How does that happen? Let's say, for a moment that you are on the road and you feel hungry. Sure, you could pull into a 7-eleven or one of its kin and grab an Apple, but that takes time and energy so instead you pull into a nice, close drive thru and get a burger and a coke. Your snack just became a meal, and a relatively high calorie one at that. So remember snacks are light, and using a meal for a snack is not a good plan.

Think Protein and Fiber

By choosing a snack that is high in protein, high in fiber or both you will end up with a snack that is filling and probably good for you too. So bear that in mind when you pick a snack. That means that you should avoid refined sugar's like candy, ice cream, cookies and the like, since they are usually low in both and will make you have a serious spike.

If you follow these simple rules for choosing good snacks you will find that not only are you full and satisfied, but that you have not derailed your diet efforts at all. You can have your cake and eat it too, as long as you don't have that cake too often. So enjoy your snack and seeing the scale go down at the same time.
