What is the purpose for spacers on laminate flooring?

The spacers allow you tomaintain the 1/4" space from the wall required for natural expansion and contraction of the flooring. This occurs from changes in humidity and its affect on the wood products (MDF board) that laminate is made from. Without spacers, you would have to eye the space making it very difficult to be accurate.
