A grown man requires about 1000 calories a day just to keep his heart beating and blood circulating. He requires another 1000 calories for simple movement during a day - walking, etc. So I think it is safe to say that if a sedentary man consumes less than 2000 calories per day, he will lose weight.
I eat about 1500 calories a day when I am losing weight. It's easier than you think. I start with a bowl of cereal, or a glass of instant breakfast, or a fiber one bar. Each has about 200 calories. For lunch, I often eat out, but try and keep the calories under 500. Three Taco Bell fresco tacos are 450, a grilled chicken sandwich with no mayo is 300, etc.
For dinner, I eat a bit more, but still keep the calories under , say 700.
Also be sure to stay hydrated. If you aren't a water person, drink unsweet tea or Crystal Light.
