What is crown birthday?

I've actually been trying to find out if the rest of the world knows what a "crown birthday is".

Traditionally, in South Africa, particularly amongst the Coloured race (or so it seems), you celebrate your Crown birthday on the day that you turn the age that corresponds with the date on which your birthday falls.

Eg- if your birthday is 27th October- when you turn 27 that will be referred to as your Crown birthday.
