Since the 1500s, Pensacola has been ruled by five governments: the Spanish Empire, which first established a settlement in 1559; the French, who took control in the early 18th century; the British, who governed after the French and Indian War; Spain regained control in 1783; and finally, the United States, which took possession in 1821 following the Adams-Onís Treaty. Each of these powers contributed to the city's diverse cultural and historical legacy.
