What does it mean 'plaiting a dark red love knot into her long black hair'?

a long time ago, whenever a girl was engaged or married she would plait her hair. the man would wear the woman's handkerchief around his collar. so plaiting with a dark red love knot means she's basically got a boyfriend so dont mess with her!! :)
