Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753–1784) was the first published African American poet and the second published American woman poet. Born in West Africa, she was enslaved and brought to America at a young age, where she was educated by her owners. Wheatley's poetry, which often addressed themes of religion, freedom, and identity, gained recognition and acclaim, making her a significant figure in American literature and early African American history. Her works include "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral," published in 1773.
