What is the relation between immigration and crime?

There is no direct evidence that there is a relationship. Immigrants have been coming to this country for 200 years and it was established by immigrants. In fact most are people escaping war, crime, and poverty to seek a better life. According to the Bureau of Justice only 14% of federal prison population are immigrants and of that many are there because they violated Immigration laws and didn't commit a crime. In state prison populations it is only 4.6% are noncitizens. The statistics show that there is no evidence that immigrants commit more crimes.
