Who discovered drugs?

In the past most drugs have been discovered either by identifying the active ingredient from traditional remedies or by serendipitous discovery. As our understanding of disease has increased to the extent that we know how disease andinfection are controlled at the molecular and physiological level, scientists are now able to try to find compounds that specifically modulate those molecules, for instance via high throughput screening.
