Berekeley was an Irish theologian and philosopher, and while he did believe in idealism, this had a different meaning in his day-- today, we associate the Word with a hopeful person who sees things as they ideally should be, but for Berkeley, idealist philosophy referred to the ideas our mind can perceive. That is, he asserted that only the mind (whether the human mind or the Divine mind of God) is able to perceive ideas, and it is through that process that humans are able to experience reality.
