Why is Tom Robinson compared to a Mockingbird?

Tom Robinson is a mockingbird in that he never hurt anyone, never did anything wrong or caused trouble. All he ever did was attempt to help Miss Ewell, to have pity on her. By sentencing him to death, the jury metaphorically "killed a mockingbird."
