How does travel agents make money?

Lets say you buy a plane ticket and hotel on your own.

Flight: 500

Hotel 36/night

Travel agent would sell you the same package for say 636. Since they are doing the work for you there are "fees" they will charge. Depending on your agency, this could be worth doing...some people prefer to not use them.
