There are several things you can do to protect your credit card and identity while shopping on the internet. The first is to stick with the major, reputable web sites where possible. Second, make sure you are using a secured (SSL) web page connection when you are putting in your personal and payment information. You can verify this by making sure the page address begins with https and your browser shows the lock icon as a closed lock. This will be at the lower right on Firefox and just to the right of the address in IE7. There are also several plug ins or built in protection mechanisms for the various browsers. Third select a payment option that exposes you to minimal risk should it be compromised. Using your debit card is not an optimal choice. One of the best solutions is using a credit card that allows you to generate a new virtual credit card number for each transaction. That way if the vendor database is hacked and the credit cards numbers stolen you will not be at risk because it is a single use number. There are other protection options offered by the credit card companies, such as SecureCode by MasterCard. Lastly, if it just does not feel right then don't do it.
