What is a platform?

A platform is a plan, design; a declaration of the principles on which a group of persons stands; a flat surface that is raised higher than the floor or ground on which people or things stand.

In computers, a platform is an underlying computer system on which application programs can run or in general any base of technologies on which other technologies.
