Brigham Young led a group of Mormon pioneers to Utah in 1847 following the expulsion of the Latter-day Saints from Illinois. After Joseph Smith's assassination, Young became the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and organized the migration westward to escape persecution. The group traveled in covered wagons, making the arduous journey across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains, ultimately arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. This marked the beginning of a significant settlement in the region, which became the center of Mormon culture.
