What does opposite and alternate mean when classifying leaves?

It refers to the stems that branch off from the main stem of the leaf.

Alternate means that the stems on one side are not opposite each other but alternate from one side to the other as you count them.

Opposite means that a stem on one side has another stem directly opposite it on the other side of the main stem.
