What state passed the first poll tax?

Virginia was the first state to implement a poll tax in 1902. This tax was part of a series of laws aimed at disenfranchising African American voters and poor white citizens by requiring payment for the right to vote. The poll tax persisted in various forms until it was deemed unconstitutional in federal elections by the 24th Amendment in 1964.
