It depends on what you define as a house and when that becomes a castle or not. If you bend the meaning of house slightly and look at probably one of the most famous examples, Balmoral. Whilst strictly speaking this royal residence is called a castle because of its toweres and turreted appearance, although much else of Balmoral resembles a grand stately home.

Cameron House is probably one of the best known houses in Scotland, a perfect example of a Baronial house which has lasted into the21st century, now functioning as a hotel, its original residence long gone.

Of course there are other examples of Scottish houses such as Mellerstain House and Broughton House.
