How do you use now and then in a sentence?

you use 'now' when you are speaking in the present tense or in quotations(direct speech).

for example am doing my homework now.

Dennis said, "I have to go now".

'then's used in indirect speech instead of now.

for example- Dennis said that he had to go then.
