The famous Pont Saint-Bénézet, commonly known as the Bridge of Avignon, was constructed in the 12th century, specifically starting in 1177. It was built under the direction of a shepherd named Bénézet, who claimed to have received a divine vision instructing him to build the bridge. The bridge originally spanned the Rhône River, connecting the city of Avignon to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, but only a portion of it remains today due to numerous floods and its eventual abandonment in the 17th century.
