Why did Caesar study public speaking?

Oration was an important part of ancient Roman politics. To be able to deliver a well spoken and impressive speech before the Roman Senate was a powerful tool to win a debate or have legislation passed. For any Roman seeking public office, or higher levels of Roman politics, Excellent public speaking skills were required. It was also important for military commanders to gain more respect and understanding by being able to address troops in a forceful and intelligent manner through public speaking.
