What were some of Jimmy Carter's important accomplishments as Governor?

As Governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter actively and succesfully fought racial discrimination in his State; he set up community centers for handicapped children; provided educational programs for convicts and increased financial aid to schools in poor areas. He also tried to abolish the death penalty in Georgia, but was overruled in this by the State legislature.
