An acknowledgement can be written for many different reasons. A receipt acknowledgement is a brief letter or email you send upon receipt of an important message or documents. A project acknowledgement is not necessarily a thank-you letter, but rather a letter acknowledging someone's support.

Praise, trophy, raise in pay, more responsibility, pat on the back, erecting a statue of the individual, naming a street or town or building after the person or a simple thank you.
