The programs that cause the computer to perform desired functions are called?

If youre talkign about the base of everything as in like computer programming, then its the code that bassically tells the programs what to do, which makes something happen on your screen, but if youre talking about as in command prompt wise, its kind of the same thing, just youre not clickign an icon, youre actually typing the command out in letters/numbers
